Overview

Mobile Money is a safe, secure and affordable way to do your banking, and is available to customers on all cellphone networks.

With Mobile Money there are no monthly or annual account service fees, and no minimum account balance required.

With Mobile Money, you can:

  • Send money instantly to any active South African cellphone number.
  • Deposit and withdraw cash at till points at participating Pick n Pay and Boxer stores.
  • Pay for goods and services, at till points, at participating Pick n Pay and Boxer stores.
  • Buy prepaid airtime and prepaid electricity.
  • Buy prepaid Data and SMS bundles.
  • Receive payments into your Mobile Money account through Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT).
  • Make payments from your Mobile Money account through Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT).
  • Pay for goods and services at most retail stores with a Mobile Money VISA Card
  • Withdraw cash at any ATM

Who can open a Mobile Money account?

You are eligible to open a Mobile Money account if you:

  1. Are 16 years of age or older,
  2. Have a valid South African identity number, and
  3. Have an active cellphone number

Each Mobile Money customer may only open one account, which is subject to successful fraud and risk control checks.

Mobile Money’s Terms and Conditions must be accepted before a Mobile Money account can be opened; these can be found in the Legal section. For additional information or if you do not understand the Terms and Conditions or how they apply to you, please contact our Customer Care Centre on 083 123 0145 (Call is free for MTN Customers).

How to

Open a Mobile Money account

To open a Mobile Money account, follow these easy steps:

  1. Dial *120*668# from your cellphone
  2. Enter your SA ID Number
  3. Agree to the Mobile Money Terms and Conditions
  4. Once you receive a confirmation SMS, dial*120*668# and follow the prompts to confirm your date of birth and full names
  5. If your application is successful, you will receive an SMS with your Mobile Money bank account number, Bank Name and Branch Code. Save these details for EFT deposits or salary payments
  6. Now dial *120*668# to create a 5-digit Mobile PIN

You can now start using your Mobile Money account, and remember to keep your Mobile PIN safe and do not share it with anyone.

Your new Mobile Money account has the following account limits:

  • A daily spend limit of R1,000
  • A monthly spend limit of R25,000
  • A maximum account balance of R25,000

Accessing your Mobile Money account

Once you have successfully opened your Mobile Money account, you can access your Mobile Money account in two ways:

  1. By using the Mobile Money USSD application by dialling *120*668#
  2. OR

  3. By using the Mobile Money mobile banking site at www.momoney.co.za

Increase your Mobile Money account limits

1. Once you have opened your Mobile Money account, go to a Pick n Pay or Boxer store with your ID book and/or proof of residence, depending on the account limits you require.

If go to a participating store with your South African ID book, the following limits would apply:

  • A daily spend limit of R5,000
  • A monthly spend limit of R25,000
  • The maximum account balance will remain the same at R25,000

If go to a participating store with your South African ID book and your proof of residence, the following limits would apply:

  • No daily spend limit, but transaction limits apply
  • No monthly spend limit, but transaction limits apply
  • No maximum account balance limit

2. Give the Mobile Money operator the cellphone number you use to access your Mobile Money account.

3. The operator will take a photo of you holding your South Africa ID book, and a photo of your ID book and/or proof of residence.

4. You will then receive an SMS notification of your account limit increase request.

5. If your request is approved, you will receive another SMS confirming that your account limits have been successfully increased. This should take about 5 minutes.

Deposit cash at a Pick n Pay / Boxer till point

To deposit cash into your Mobile Money account, bring the cash you want to deposit to your nearest Pick n Pay or Boxer store till point, and follow these five simple steps:

  1. Dial *120*668# and enter your Mobile PIN.
  2. Select “Deposit Cash” and then select “Continue”
  3. Give the cashier the 7-digit wiCode number
  4. Give the cashier the cash you want to deposit
  5. You will receive a confirmation SMS

Please note:

  • Your Mobile Money session may end if you take too long to respond to the prompts. If this happens, please re-dial *120*668# to re-start the process.
  • Cash deposit and maximum account balance limits apply. Please review account type transaction limit for more information about which limits apply.

Make a payment (EFT) into your Mobile Money account

Mobile Money lets you make payments (e.g. your salary) from other banks, directly into your Mobile Money account.

To make a payment into your Mobile Money account, follow these steps:

  1. Dial *120*668# and enter your Mobile PIN.
  2. Select option 7 for ‘More’, then option 1 for ‘My Account’.
  3. Select option 3 for ‘Account Number’ to see your Mobile Money bank account number, bank branch code and bank name (South African Bank of Athens Limited) displayed on the screen.
  4. You can now use these details, or give them to others, to make electronically payments (EFT) from another bank into your Mobile Money account.
  5. Funds may not appear immediately in your Mobile Money account; time delays and fees are subject to the bank from which the payment is made.

Send Money from your Mobile Money account

  1. Send money instantly to anyone with an active cellphone number in South Africa. All you need to know is their cellphone number. Dial *120*668# and enter your Mobile PIN.
  2. Select “Send Money”.
  3. Select a previous cellphone number or enter a new cellphone number you want to send money to.
  4. Enter the amount you want to send.
  5. Confirm the cellphone number & amount.
  6. Both you & the person you send money to will receive a confirmation SMS.

If the recipient does not have a Mobile Money account, the recipient will be prompted to open a Mobile Money account. The recipient has 7 days to open a Mobile Money account. If he/she do not open a Mobile Money account, the funds will be returned to you

Withdraw cash at a Pick n Pay / Boxer Tillpoint

For those times when you need cash, Mobile Money makes it easy to withdraw cash from your Mobile Money account.

To make a cash withdrawal, visit the till point at your nearest Pick n Pay or Boxer store and follow these steps:

  1. Dial *120*668# and enter your Mobile PIN
  2. Select “Withdraw Cash” and then select “Continue”
  3. Give the cashier the 7-digit wiCode number, and how much cash you want to withdraw
  4. The cashier will give you the cash
  5. You will receive a confirmation SMS

Get your Mobile Money VISA Card and withdraw cash from any ATM in South Africa. ATM fees apply.

Buy prepaid airtime using Mobile Money

Never run out of airtime again. You can buy prepaid airtime for yourself and for others, for any cellphone network in South Africa using Mobile Money.

And if you’re an MTN customer, you get a 5% Cash Reward (5% of the airtime value you buy) paid into your Mobile Money account when you buy prepaid airtime using Mobile Money.

Terms and Conditions apply.

  1. Dial *120*668# and enter your Mobile PIN.
  2. Select “Buy Airtime”.
  3. Select whether you want to buy prepaid airtime for your cellphone or for another cellphone. If buying for another cellphone, enter the cellphone number.
  4. Select or enter the amount.
  5. Confirm the cellphone number and amount.
  6. You will receive a confirmation SMS.

The prepaid airtime will automatically be topped up to the cellphone number

Buy prepaid data & SMS bundles using Mobile Money

Need to buy prepaid data or SMS bundles? You can buy prepaid data and SMS bundles for yourself and for others, for any cellphone network in South Africa using Mobile Money.

  1. Dial *120*668# and enter your Mobile PIN
  2. Select “More”, then select “Buy Bundles”
  3. Select what type of bundle you want to buy (SMS or Data)
  4. Select whether you want to buy a prepaid bundle for your cellphone or for another cellphone. If buying for another cellphone, enter the cellphone number
  5. Select the size of the bundle you want to buy
  6. Confirm the cellphone number and bundle
  7. You will receive a confirmation SMS
The prepaid bundle will automatically be loaded onto the cellphone number

Pay at Till for shopping at Pick n Pay / Boxer till points with wiCode

Enjoy a secure, easy and convenient way to pay for your shopping at Pick n Pay and Boxer till points with Mobile Money.

And remember that you can also withdraw cash at the same time – just ask the cashier that you would like to pay and withdraw cash.

When you are ready to pay for your shopping, follow these easy steps:

  1. Dial *120*668# and enter your Mobile PIN
  2. Select “Pay at Till” and then select “Continue”
  3. Give the cashier the 7-digit wiCode number. If you also want to withdraw cash, tell the cashier the amount of cash you want to withdraw
  4. Receive your goods bought. If you chose to withdraw cash as well, the cashier will then also give you the cash.
  5. You will receive a confirmation SMS

Buy Prepaid Electricity*

Easily buy prepaid electricity with Mobile Money, by following these steps:.

  1. Dial *120*668# and enter your Mobile PIN
  2. Select “Buy Electricity”
  3. Select a previous meter number or enter a new meter number
  4. Select or enter the amount, or request a Free Token
  5. Confirm the amount and the meter number
  6. You will receive a confirmation SMS, as well as an SMS with the Token number

Please note:

Important points to remember

  • Your Mobile PIN is strictly confidential. Do not disclose your Mobile PIN to anyone, and specifically not to cashiers or other staff of the retailer stores, Mobile Money Activation Agents or any of our employees.
  • In the event that your Mobile PIN is compromised; please contact the Mobile Money Customer Care Centre immediately on 083 123 0145.
  • Only share your account number if you want to receive a payment (EFT) into your Mobile Money account from someone you know.
  • You can request a statement of your Mobile Money account by calling the Mobile Money Customer Care Centre on 083 123 0145. Issuing statements is a value-add service and charges will apply.
  • To increase the account limits on your Mobile Money account, go to any participating Pick n Pay or Boxer store with your South African ID book and/or proof of residence, and request that you would like to increase the limits on your Mobile Money account. This process should take no longer than 5 minutes.

Mobile Money account fees and limits


With Mobile Money there are no monthly or yearly account service fees, and no minimum monthly balance is required.

Certain limits do apply on the value of the transactions you may make and to the maximum balance you may hold in your account. The daily and monthly debit spend limits include the total value of:

  • Any goods and services purchased,
  • Cash withdrawals made,
  • Payments made,
  • Money sent, and
  • Debit orders paid

Follow the below steps to activate your Mobile Money VISA Card on your Mobile Money account:

1. Dial *120*668# and enter your Mobile PIN

2. Select “More”, then select “My Account”

3. Select “Mobile Money Card”, then select “Activate Card”

4. Select the account on which to activate your Card if you have more than one account

5. Accept the Mobile Money Card Terms & Conditions

6. Enter the 11-digit barcode number displayed on the back of the Card

7. Enter the last 4 digits of the 16-digit number on the front of the Card

8. You will receive a confirmation SMS that your Card has been successfully activated

You will now need to dial *120*668# again to set a Card PIN.

Lost or Stolen Card

1. If your Mobile Money Card is lost or stolen, dial *120*668# to access the Mobile Money menu and select the “Cancel Card” option.

2. You can also contact the Mobile Money Customer Care Centre on 083 123 0145 to cancel your Card.

Forgotten Card PIN

1. If you have forgotten your Mobile Money VISA Card PIN you can contact the Mobile Money Customer Care Centre on 083 123 0145 for assistance. Call is free for MTN customers.
