MTN SA Foundation
The over-arching social investment mandate of the foundation is to connect communities
MTN SA Foundation recognises that the wellbeing of a community is inextricably linked
to the health of its people. Without good health, people are unable to actively
contribute to the socio-economic growth of their society. Through its health portfolio
the foundation promotes sustainable healthy lifestyles in communities. This is achieved
through school and community-based initiatives targeting TB, lifestyle diseases
and HIV and AIDS. The Foundation undertakes these interventions in partnership with
different organisations, promoting programmes that support disease prevention, early
detection, as well as treatment, care and support for needy communities.
The arts and culture portfolio of the MTN SA Foundation oversees programmes that
provide schools with access to teaching skills and curriculum-aligned educational
resources. We also manage community arts programmes that build the capacity and
skills necessary for people to access employment-creating opportunities in the cultural
industries. Our work includes the management of the extensive exhibition programme
of the MTN Art Collection, ensuring that MTN´s pledge in 2001 to use its many
artworks for educational purposes is fulfilled through travelling exhibitions, seminars,
classroom mini-exhibitions and loans to high-profile galleries.
The promotion of entrepreneurship and small business development remains an important
priority in addressing socio-economic challenges facing our country. The foundation
contributes towards the creation of enabling environments that encourage an entrepreneurial
culture and the development of small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs). We support
a number of programmes that encourage self-reliance in individuals and communities.
This idea is promoted through programmes that inculcate entrepreneurship among school-going
youth, through the establishment of business support centres, by business mentoring
and by developing capacity amongst MTN SA Foundation´s suppliers.
In addition to implementing socio-economic development programmes, MTN SA Foundation
is responsible for ensuring MTN´s good corporate citizenship. This mandate
is realised through high-visibility programmes which create developmental platforms,
particularly for disadvantaged communities. Our special projects include 16 Days
of Activism Against Women and Children Abuse, Women´s Day celebrations, and
sponsorship of the South African Democracy Education Trust (SADET) for publication
of The Road to Democracy books.
Each year over 4 000 company employees participate in the MTN Employee Volunteerism
Programme (EVP). Through this initiative MTN creates opportunities for employees
to make meaningful contributions to community development. This programme provides
sustained positive benefits for communities through EVP campaigns such as 21 Days
of Y´ello Care, Mandela Day, Cansa Shavathon and Christmas Drive.
