MTN basics

To sign an MTN Contract in store, you'll need the following:

  • ID
  • Proof of residence (e.g., levy statement or electricity bill)
  • Proof of income
  • Three months' bank statements

To set up MTN Voicemail, dial 132 and follow the prompts to record your personal greeting.

To set up MTN Call Line Identity, call 135 to activate the service if you're on MTN Contract. The service is set up automatically for MTN PayAsYouGo customers.

If you're struggling to get online, check the following:

  • Does your device support data?
  • Are you in an area with GSM coverage? (See network coverage map)
  • Does your SIM card support basic or enhanced data services?
  • Has your service provider activated your SIM card for data services?

Please note: if there's a network lock on your cellphone, please bring it in to your nearest MTN store and have it unlocked free of charge.

PINs and passwords

Your default PIN code on your cellphone is 00000.

Dial 132 and follow the prompts to customise your PIN.

Register online for My MTN now, and you can use the same profile, username and password for your My contract (MTN Active) and My shop accounts.

Numbers to know

Dial 112 for emergency services 112 operates throughout South Africa 24/7. You can dial 112 (even without a SIM card in your phone) for help with most emergencies, including fires, crimes, snakebites or poisoning and breakdowns.

Dial *136# to check your balance This is a free service that lets you check your daily and monthly balances for remaining minutes, SMSs and data.

Dial *120*668# to send A safe, secure and affordable way to do your banking with no account service fees or minimum balance required.

Dial 200 for Directory Enquiries This is a 24-hour service for local and international numbers. The calls made to Directory Enquiries are charged according to the price plan you're on.

Off-peak times

Weekdays from 19:00 to 07:00, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays are off-peak times for My MTNChoice, My MTNChoice Flexi and MTN PayAsYouGo customers.
