  • Long Term Evolution, commonly known as LTE, is the latest and greatest in high speed wireless network technology.

In simple terms, it enables you to stream music video and online gaming up to three times faster than with current technologies.

Ever experienced that annoying delay before a file or a web page starts downloading? LTE has lower latency, which means music and videos, photos and web pages start loading much quicker. This makes it great for online gaming too.

  • Get started with LTE

We’re sure you can’t wait to experience MTN LTE technology, so here’s four things you need to know about how to make use of LTE.

    #

    How to get LTE

    Step 1

Ensure handsets are LTE capable supporting the following bands:1800 MHZ

To access the internet using LTE, you’ll need to get an LTE compatible cellphone, tablet or modem. It’s important to ensure that devices are LTE capable and supporting on the 1800MHZ LTE spectrum bands.

Consult your handset manufacturer for LTE capability

The following are on the list of approved devices to work on the MTN network

    1. Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 (MTN promotion offer ended 28 February 2013)

    2. iPhone 5 (A1429)

    3. Nokia Lumia 920

    4. Nokia Lumia 820

    5. Sony Xperia LT251

    6. Sony Xperia C6603

    Step 2

Ensure you have the correct SIM, i.e. 128k

Easily identifiable via 3G or LTE branding on the back of the SIM.

Ensure you have the correct SIM, i.e. 128K SIM can be identified by 3G or LTE branding on the back of the SIM. The 128K SIM is currently the only SIM that enables access to the LTE network.

128K 3FF 3rd Generation Form Factor commonly known as micro SIM:

128k 4FF 4th Generation Form Factor commonly known as nano SIM:

    Step 3

Ensure you have the LTE Software update

Consult your handset manufacturer for the latest version

    Step 4

Subscribe to MTN LTE access service.

To access LTE on the MTN network you will be required to activate the LTE VAS service

The LTE service must be loaded onto your profile which will enable your handset to seamlessly use the LTE network. The LTE service can be loaded onto any Contract or TopUp Voice or Data package as an add-on service for both new and existing customers. To get LTE VAS services simply go to your nearest MTN store or call your service provider. This service is not yet available to PayAsYouGo subscribers.

    Step 5

Ensure that you are in an area covered by LTE.

LTE is already available in parts of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and will be rolling out with much more coverage sites by year end. Take a look at our street level coverage map to see if your area is covered.

  • Generic LTE FAQ

How do I know if I have LTE coverage?

Your handset will have an indicator which will either display the letters “LTE” or an icon

What happens when I move out of a LTE coverage area into a 2G or 3G area?

There will be a seamless and automatic handover from LTE to 3G or 2G networks, which means that your data connection will not be disrupted.

My LTE handset won’t access the LTE network even though there is good LTE coverage, why?

Make sure that Your Handset is on the list of MTN approved devices. Ensure that you have a 12k SIM, check that the LTE service has been loaded and is active on your account. Check if your handset is having the correct software. Some Handsets allow users to turn LTE on or off, check that the settings are not set to off.. Contact your nearest MTN service provider should you be unsuccessful.

My LTE handset accesses the LTE network but it always reverts to the 2G/3G network when making a voice call or when I use the USSD functionality, why?

The LTE network currently does not allow for voice calls, SMS and USSD to be switched over the LTE network. A fall back is then required to move you onto the 2G/3G network whichever has the strongest signal in the area allowing you to make calls, SMS and use the USSD function.

How can I recharge the airtime on my LTE Smartphone & tablets?

You can load an airtime voucher or internet bundle in four ways:

    · ATM TopUp at Standard Bank and FNB ATMs

    · Self-service – www.mtn.co.za/selfservice

    · myMTNza mobile App

    · MTN Eazi Recharge

Internet bundles offer great savings. Take a look at all the available internet bundles.

  • MTN and Bloodhound SSC partner to set a land speed record

MTN is excited to have partnered with the Bloodhound Supersonic Car (SSC) as official telecoms partner in an effort to improve the quality of (and interest in) education in South Africa. The aim of this partnership is to inspire future geniuses to take up careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics by showcasing these subjects in the most “speedy” way possible.

    What is the Bloodhound SSC?

Imagine a car capable of reaching a new land speed record of 1 600km/h. Tough as a submarine, faster than a speeding bullet, faster than the speed of sound and covering four soccer fields per second, this is the world’s most advanced land speed record car, it’s the Bloodhound SSC. The world’s land speed record is to be attempted at South Africa’s Haskeen Pan in 2013 in the Northern Cape province.

MTN will be providing the team with high-speed connectivity through their data network, which will allow for real-time streaming of their attempt to break the land speed record. In addition, MTN will provide voice and LTE (Long Term Evolution) internet connectivity for on-car internet downloads for the team, HD video streaming as well as high-speed internet solutions by linking to a fibre point in Upington. This will allow for videos and information to be uploaded on the web and will mean that the public can be updated on every detail in real time.

Internet at the speed of LTE

MTN is once again at the forefront of innovation and cutting edge technology. We have finally launched the availability of LTE (long term evolution) that promises to bring our customers quicker broadband speed and even better internet experience. We have been working frantically and have upgraded over 1 600 of our base stations to prepare for the activation of LTE and to ensure that we provide the quicker connection speeds that LTE offers. This evolution offers broadband speeds of up to 70mbps and consumers can expect speeds of between 7 and 20mbps on average, depending on network conditions. LTE is much faster than HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) and offers more capacity. LTE will be very critical to the Bloodhound project’s success in breaking the world speed record.
